"I care about everybody," Tara said. "I thought everyone's supposed to care about each other."
Maddie started walking down the hallway again, and it was much, much larger than it seemed. Finally, they got to a room with tables in it, and Maddie started opening large containers of pink frosting and bags of pure sugar and eating them.

A trail of red roses lead through the woods, but it ended in a patch of thorns.
Maddie tossed Leo a few slices of toast. "You probably shouldn't eat anything sugary. I'm the only one who shall eat frosting and sugar for breakfast."

A few minutes later, teenagers started pouring into the room, almost all of them boys.
Daniel approached Maddie, seeming nervous. "Maddie, the Fates are deciding."
Maddie scowled. "So soon?"
