"I'm sorry," Maddie said, while she was quickly packing a bag. "I meant to Iris-message you sooner. Chiron kept bugging me with Iris-messages, and it turns out I have to go back to camp early."

"...Maybe he only told me," Maddie said. "There's a disease going around. Apparently, it could kill campers, and there isn't a found cure yet. He thought since I'm all medieval and stuff I'd know how to stop it."

"Chiron said already a few people have," Maddie said, zipping up her bag. "He was acting a little strange, though. He didn't sound like himself. Maybe he's just stressed out. Anyway, I'll be back at camp in a few days."

The Iris-message disappeared, and four days later, Maddie was back at camp.

Annabeth fell asleep soon after, but in the middle of the night, she suddenly woke up. She sighed, feeling absolutely miserable. She glanced at her knife, and quietly picked it up.
Leo ran straight to Maddie and hugged her tightly.

Celeste still slept, not knowing Annabeth had cut herself.
"I missed you, too," Maddie said quietly.
She almost kissed Leo, when suddenly Chiron said, in a strange monotone, "Madeline, I need to see you in the Big House."

Celeste sensed Annabeth staring at her, and stirred in her sleep.
Chiron nodded. "Of course."
Maddie frowned, looking unsure, and followed Chiron into the Big House. Chiron's eyes almost had a blank stare, and they disappeared into the door for several hours.

Celeste mumbled a bit, and fell back asleep.
"Chiron, you really don't seem alright," Maddie insisted, sounding like she's been saying it hundreds of times.
"I'm fine," Chiron murmured. "We still have much to discuss."
Maddie sighed. "I still don't know the disease you're talking about."
There was a moment of silence, then Chiron said, "Read this book. I read about the symptoms, and they match up perfectly to what our campers are feeling."

Maddie hesitated, then said, "It's really big."
"You'll be able to understand it."
"Are you sure you're alright?"

Annabeth immediately laid back down, holding onto her wrist. She hoped Celeste wouldn't notice she was awake, but she knew she would, since she wasn't snoring like she normally would.
