"Yes you do." Maddie said. "Or else you'll get all depressed. Then you'll be all 'Ugh, I'm all depressed. If only I listened to the great and powerful Maddie and listened to her when she told me to tell her what's wrong. But I didn't, so now I suffer the consequences.'" Maddie frowned. "I don't want that to happen to you, Leo. So tell me what's wrong."

Maddie shrugged. "Well, my brother used to tell me if at first you fail, you get up and try again. But first you get really angry and kick a chair or something to let off some steam." Maddie frowned. "Okay, so maybe that last part isn't the most helpful. But still. I'm sure one of these times you'll get it right. Festus sounds pretty cool. If you keep trying and you really want to get it, someday you'll have it. Sometimes it takes a long time, but you always get it. It works for me." Maddie said

Weeks passed, and there was no sign of Annabeth. Percy was getting very worried, and he didn't come out of his cabin for days at a time.

One night, Maddie had an awful dream. She was running around in the forest, panting. She didn't know exactly what she was running from, but she knew it was important not to stop running. Keep running, Maddie thought. Then dark, dark clouds rolled over. Then she heard a really scary voice, saying: "Run, granddaughter of Kronos. But you can run from your own fate."
"Who are you?!" Maddie panted.
The voice ignored the question and said: "You were created to destroy."

Leo kept having many nightmares at night. During the day, he was rarely seen. It appeared that he was going somewhere for most of the day without saying anything.

When Maddie woke up, the first thought she had was 'Maybe I can't run from my own fate. But I can at least try to.' She shakily grabbed her sweatshirt and ran as fast as she could go into the forest.

Maddie kept running until she was in the middle of the forest. She panted, and leaned against a tree, exhausted. She was scared, too. She knew she was born to destroy, but she tried not to think about it. Something went wrong, though. Calm down, she thought. You didn't mess things up too badly yet, right? Right...?
