November 2017
a stranger
Maddie popped her head in. "Hey there. How's Dan feeling?"
"He just had wisdom tooth surgery."
"Well, that's a twist of events," Maddie said, plopping down on the cot next to Dan.
"Don't talk to him, he's on laughing gas."
Maddie ignored Charlie and cheerily said, "Hi Dan!!"

Dan jumped back, looking scared for a second. "What happened?" He mumbled, clearly not remembering the events of the past hour.

"Yeah!" Maddie grinned. "You had your teeth ripped out of your mouth. Quite painful, in fact."
"Maddie!" Charlie said harshly.
"Oh, let me have my fun!" Maddie begged, pulling on Charlie's collar.
"You're ALWAYS having fun."

Dan looked back and forth between Maddie and Charlie, racking his brain to figure out what was happening. Everything seemed so... odd. He didn't know why, but he suddenly felt giggly.

“So how’re you feeling, my man? Hows it been?” Maddie chirped, wrapping an arm around Dan.
“Don’t touch him!” Charlie scolded.

"So in the morning, I had a tub of frosting. It was the bomb dot com, let me tell ya," Maddie said enthusiastically. It was quite apparent that she was rarely asked about her day.
Charlie let out a long sigh. "Maddie-"
Maddie ignored him. "And theeeeen . . . . hmm, what did I do? I forget. I talked to Abby a little. She annoys me sometimes, but twins can't be apart for longer than a month at a time, or else we simultaneously explode. It's scientifically proven."

Dan listened intently, the laughing gas obviously still having an effect on him. He seemed spacey and loopy.

Dan shrugged, smiling. "It's been great!" It was as if he totally forgot he had had a stroke the day before.
Leo suddenly popped in. "How's Dan doing?"

“He’s doing good!” Maddie chirped.
“My gods, can you two just leave?” Charlie said angrily. “I want to be alone.”
“Aloooooone?” Maddie said, walking up to Charlie. She tried to sling an arm around his shoulder but since their heights were so drastically different, she only managed to get it around his waist. “With DAN? Oooooh, I see what’s going on here.”
Charlie rolled his eyes. “It’s not like that.”

Leo smirked. "Why else would you wanna be alone with Dan," he said slyly.
Just then, Dan suddenly began having another seizure.

“Because you’re not supposed to be in the infirmary!” Charlie shouted. He immediately laid Dan on the ground to prevent him from falling and hooked him up to a few machines to calm the seizure.
“Why not?” Maddie asked casually, laying down on Dan’s former bed.
“So you don’t see your friends die, like I have to,”Charlie said harshly. For the first time, watching Dan have a seizure and Charlie freaking out, Maddie wondered how many people Charlie had seen die under his care. She was about to ask, but Charlie seemed rather busy.

Maddie sighed. “Oh, Charlie. You’re so stressed lately.” She glanced at Leo. “He didn’t use to be like this, you know. He was so nice when he was a teen.”

“I have to go now, Chris just texted me,” Maddie said, kissing Charlie platonically on the cheek, who simply ignored her. “See you guys later.”
