"That was certainly a twist," Maddie said.
"So we know he needs his wisdom teeth removed," Tara frowned. "But that doesn't explain the seizures and strokes."

"Hopefully he's okay," Leo scowled.
Dan whimpered and closed his eyes. He was having a long day and wanted it to be over.

Charlie laid down on the ground again. "Tara what if I killed myself."
"We'd all be much happier," Tara said.
"Thanks. I love you."
Tara sighed. "I'm already taking care of Oliver-"
"How is he?" Maddie interjected.
"Bad," Tara said, not elaborating. "I can't take care of Dan."

"I don't want to take care of Dan, for I am dying," Charlie said.
"You're dying?" Tara said, not seeming concerned.
"Hopefully," Charlie said.
"Charlie, I officially assign you caregiver and overseer of Dan Chase until further notice," Tara said.
"Says who?!" Charlie said, getting to his feet.
"Says me."

"Why can't you assign it to Leo or Maddie?!" Charlie said, full-on panicking now.
"They're not doctors," Tara said evenly.
"Why can't you give it to any other Apollo kids?"
"As much as I hate giving you a compliment in any way, shape, or form," Tara said, "they're all idiots. And you are too, but you're less of an idiot."
"Please, Tara, if you've ever had any sort of love for me-"
"No," Tara said. "And I'm not sorry. I do all of the work around here, and I'm only sixteen!"
"Wait, you're sixteen?!" Maddie's jaw dropped. "No. Way."

"You're sixteen?!" Charlie mock-cried, hugging Tara. "But now we can't get married!"
Tara pushed Charlie away. "Shut up, he's waking up," Tara said, gesturing at Dan. "I suggest you become acquainted with him."

"Oh, you know, I come and I go," Maddie said, waving a hand. "Like mono."
"Do you even know what mono is?" Tara asked.
"Hey, I only have a freshman education, shut," Maddie said.
"In college?" Tara frowned.
"High-school. Anywho, I heard you had a stroke. I thought that's only for, like, old people," Maddie said.

“I heard that when people are depressed or generally feel dissatisfied in life, they die sooner,” Maddie said. “I think it’s sort of funny. Like, you die from the sheer force of wanting to die so badly.”
“But if you’re a demigod you die and come back to life because Hades wants you to suffer,” Charlie said.
“Throwback to the 70’s!” Maddie smiled.
“1970’s?” Tara scowled.
“1770’s.” Maddie sat down on the cot next to Dan. “You know what? We should write a song about Dan.”

"Well," Maddie said, seemingly producing a guitar from thin air and taking out a notepad, "I'm glad you asked."
Charlie closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead.
Maddie strummed out a note on the guitar. "Charlie, would you mind singing this for me? I'm a terrible singer."
"I would mind, actually," Charlie said, but complied. He sung out the first few notes as Maddie played a few chords.
"Dan is a cool guy, Dan is swell
If he likes your or not, it's hard to tell
He bottles up feelings and doesn't show them well
But if you wrote a song about him, it would definitely sell,"
Charlie seemed distressed. "Do you want me to go on?"
Tara, for once, seemed entertained. "Please do."

Dan had his hand covering is face as he looked down, and it was hard to tell, but he was totally blushing. Despite this, he made no attempts to stop Maddie and Charlie.
Leo appeared to be entertained. "I need to hear more," hr chuckled.

Maddie played out the next note, and Charlie sang along.
"Dan is a boy and he is valid
I'm not very sure if he likes salad
But he should because vegetables are healthy
One day he'll be famous and on the telly,"
"The telly?" Charlie asked.
"Television," Maddie said.
"That's a stretch."
"Try finding something that rhymes with healthy!" Maddie argued.

"Now here's the chorus, we're picking up tempo. Stay with me," Maddie urged.
"Oh, Daaaaan!
This is my oooode to Dan!
Oh Daaaaan!
We are all a fan!
Oh Daaaaan!
He's a stand-up guy!
Oh Daaaaan!
I'm so glad he's alive!"
"End of chorus, second verse," Maddie warned. "Check the key signature."
"Maddie, I'm a child of Apollo, I think I can handle it."
"Okay! Okay!" Maddie threw her hands up and then strummed out the next chord.
"You'll never know how special you are,
To me you are the brightest star,
You are smarter than most of us,
And someone I kind of trust,
I knew you since you were just fifteen,
You were such a good friend to me,
Even when I was a cringy teen,
And you smell like you are very clean,"
Charlie laughed. "You were a very cringy teen."
Maddie shrugged. "I own up to it. Unlike some people." She pushed Charlie's chest goodnaturedly.

You're a gift that the Gods sent,
I don't know what I'd do if you weren't here,
With you by my side, there's nothing to fear,

I hope he doesn't dieeeeee . . . "
Maddie ceremionusly played out the last note.
"I . . . have questions," Charlie said.
"Who knew she could play the guitar?" Tara marveled.
"That is not one of the questions I had in mind," Charlie said.

Tara frowned. "Um, excuse me."
"Charlie doesn't like his body," Maddie continued. "And I'm not trying to invalidate you or anything. I know you think it's different because you're trans, and it is, but you're not as alone as you think you are."
