“Then I guess you’ll just have to stay here under my supervision until you can walk,” Charlie said, sounding irritated. “Please recover as quickly as possible. I really want to sleep.”

Dan rolled his eyes. "In that case I'll take my sweet time," he smirked.

“Watch it, Danny boy. I could just give you a lethal injection and be done with it,” Charlie muttered. He took out a file lettered “Oliver Hills,” And started paging through it, frowning.

“I don’t care what you want to be called, Daniel-er, Danny,” Charlie said, putting down the file and seeming more sad than angry, as if hed remembered something he’s been trying to forget.

“Yeah, just ... you picked a stupid name,” Charlie mumbled. “There are plenty of better names out there.”

"Excuse me?" Dan snarled. "It's not like it was your choice! You don't have to go through everything I have to!"

"Picking your name is a choice, and you made a stupid one," Charlie said.
Tara emerged from the doorway, carrying a stack of papers. "Hey, Charlie."

“Hey, Tara,” Charlie said. “How’s Oliver?”
“A lot better, actually. He’s quite popular among the girls, they think he’s just so brave and handsome.” Tara laughed, thumbing through the papers and beginning to sort them. “Dan, how’re you feeling?”

"I'm fine," Dan muttered quietly. It was obvious that he wasn't fine, but he was tired and didn't want to talk about his feelings.

“Alright. Get plenty of rest,” Tara said, patting Dan on the back and disappearing behind an infirmary curtain.

Dan sighed, and decided to sleep. He leaned back and tried to sleep but Charlie's comment kept bugging him too much.

Right when Tara was out of earshot, Charlie put on a winter jacket even though it was over 70 degrees outside.
“I have to go get ready in my cabin, I’m seeing somebody tonight,” Charlie said. “Just sleep and don’t tell Tara I left.”

“My sister, Willow,” Charlie said. “She apparently needs to tell me something important. You’ve met her, right?”

“... I don’t know if I’m coming back, to be quite honest,” Charlie said. “She’s been pressuring me to move out of camp and actually make money being a surgeon. I’m not sure if that’s what she wants to talk about, though. If she just got a new dog or something dumb and girly, I’ll be back tomorrow morning.”

"Oh... Well... do whatever would make you happy. That's what I did," Dan said, looking disappointed.

Charlie laughed dryly. “Nothing makes me happy.” He opened the door and began to leave, but stopped and said, “but thanks, anyway,” and then left.

Dan sadly watched Charlie leave, and closed his eyes. Suddenly, his brown Labrador, Louie, jumped out from under the bed and curled up with him. Dan stoked his fur until they both fell asleep together.

Very, very early the next morning, Charlie and Willow came storming in the infirmary. Although Charlie was very tall, Willow towered an inch or two above him, and she looked scary mad.
“I’ll follow you to the bathroom if I have to,” Willow said, her voice soft yet deep.
“Just be quiet, I have to take care of Dan,” Charlie mumbled.

"Medicine has to be taken at specific times. Don't question your doctor," Charlie said, shaking a bottle of pills into his palm.
"He's trying to find a reason not to listen to me," Willow said. Although Willow looked much more feminine than Charlie, they looked almost eerily similar, even down to the slight gaps between their front teeth and slacking posture. She finally drew her eyes to Dan, and looked at him with slight disgust and contempt, as if talking to anybody was a waste of her time. "And who are you?"

"Dan," Dan said awkwardly. "You've, uh, met me before but things were different back then." He wasn't quite sure how to explain who he was, and for some reason his face felt hot while talking to Willow.
