Leo rolled his eyes at Charlie, looking bothered, but he seemed to be more concerned about Dan. "How's Dan doing?"

"Okay, I guess, given the circumstances," Maddie said. "We should let him sleep." She cleared her throat. "On a completely and totally unrelated note, I wonder if Charlie would happen to like somebody."
Charlie blew a puff of smoke out. "Hmm. I'll let you wonder."
"Well, that's very kind of you, Charlie, it REALLY is, but I was hoping you could give me some valuable insight," Maddie said.
"Who I LIKE? What is this, fifth grade?" Charlie said.
"Well, you're like, a billion years old and you're not a relationship. That's kinda sad," Maddie said.
"I'm twenty eight."

Charlie, it's just a simple question," Leo said, looking and sounding annoyed. "Just answer her."

"If you really care, no, I don't 'like' anybody," Charlie said.
"Really, Charlie? You wanna die alone with just your cats?" Maddie asked.
"Evelyn died," Charlie said, (Evelyn referring to his precious cat), his expression stony. "That's the only reason I'm here, to retrieve my cat. Then I can leave and get my own apartment to be alone."
"Don't you want kids?"
"Look how that turned out for you," Charlie said.
"What do you mean?"
Charlie rolled his eyes. "When was the last time you've spoken to Christiana or Oliver?"

Leo looked down, angry at Charlie all of a sudden.
Dan wasn't able to sleep, so he listened to Maddie and Charlie's conversation. He started crying, unaware that they could probably hear him.

"Well, they're not too great," Charlie said. "Oliver is eleven. Christiana is fifteen."
"I knew that, how did you know that?"
"Because everybody knows Oliver now," Charlie said, "and Christiana's hot."

Dan walked into the room, still looking like a wreck, but it was clear that he'd been crying.
"You look awful," Leo said. "Shouldn't you be resting?"
"Couldn't sleep," Dan shrugged.

Maddie still looked angry at Charlie, but she turned her attention to Dan. "Maybe we should get going then."
"He still looks awful," Charlie said. "He should have more time to recover."
"When did YOU suddenly start caring?" Maddie said. "We should go. We need to get this over with."

Dan sighed, walking out the door. He was visibly exhausted, but he tried to hide it well. He also tried to hide the fact that he was blushing uncontrollably.

Maddie gestured. "See? He's fine. Let us be off, then."
"Fine," Charlie stood up, wobbling a bit.
"I'm hungry," Maddie said, suddenly taking out a tub of frosting as they began to walk.

Dan kept glancing at Charlie every now and then, looking uncomfortable. Leo noticed this,and scowled.
"Is he okay?" he whispered to Maddie.

"I think he kinda likes Charlie," Maddie whispered back. "But I'm not sure."
Charlie didn't really seem to notice or care, swaying back and forth, looking very ill.

"Not everyone can stay skinny like you," Charlie said.

There were sounds of a monster-like screech in the background, but instead of a battle cry, it sounded like it was in pain.
"We're supposed to be the only ones down here," Maddie muttered.
" . . . So . . . there's something in here that's big enough to brutally murder a monster," Charlie sighed. "That's perfect."
