Annabeth frowned. "Wait here. I'll be back." She ran off, and returned a few minutes later with some rope. She lowered it so Maddie could reach it.

Maddie stared at the rope for a minute. What if Annabeth let go as she was climbing up? She hesitated, scared. For two seconds, her hair turned black and straight, her skin turned extremely pale, and her eyes were red. Then she shifted back to how she normally looked, and grabbed onto the rope. She hoped Annabeth didn't notice that.

Annabeth didn't seem to notice. She tugged on the rope until Maddie was safe on the ground. "Are you okay?" She asked.

Maddie nodded. "T-thanks." She said shakily. Her nerves were unstable, and she hoped she didn't shift again. Unfortunately, she did, but at least it was only two seconds again.

Maddie slowly put down the mirror. She didn't look like herself at all. She felt horrible hiding herself, but she felt like she had to. It's okay, Maddie thought. Go ahead and cry your eyes out. She leaned against a tree and cried.
