Maddie inched inside. "Uh, hi. We got a problem." She took a deep breath, then talked really fast, like she always did when she was nervous. "Aphrodite wants me to kill Leo, and I was like 'no way!' so she was like 'then I'll kill you!' then I was like 'Ahh!!!' so I stabbed our book what should we do?!?" Maddie pretended not to hear Scarlet, but the words stung inside of her. It was either die, or dump him. Which was worse?

Maddie silently sat. The longer she sat there, the less human she looked. After the grass died, slowly thickets of thorns grew in their place, surrounding Maddie. Maddie didn't care.
