"There's this girl named Celeste, Annabeth's girlfriend," Austin said. "She went missing. We're not sure where she is and Reyna thinks you might know."
"...I've heard that name before," Frank said. "I assume you've heard of Gaea trying to return."

Maddie bit her lip, nodding, and walked away. Austin and Charlie followed her out of Camp Jupiter, seeming stressed.

Almost an hour later, the ground in front of them split open, clouds of dark mist pouring out. Maddie backed away, looking more terrified than she should.
"It's okay," Charlie frowned, taking out his sword.
"No, it's not," Maddie said. "There's something I need to tell y-"
"It has to wait, Maddie," Austin said.

"Give her back," Maddie muttered.
"What was that?" The voice snarled.
"Give her back!" Maddie snapped, stepping closer to the cracks in the ground. "I said I wanted her alive, for Annabeth. And it's not like I never cared about her."

"Not until you promise to be on Gaea's side," The voice growled.
"Shut up and just give her back, Typhon," Maddie said.
Typhon grunted in protest, and a tan hand started pulling out at the cracks in the ground. Maddie grabbed the hand and pulled it up. Celeste came out, shivering. "W-what...what's going on? Where am I?"

"It doesn't matter," Maddie murmured.
"It does," Charlie said, seeming almost as confused as Celeste. "I don't get it. Why did Typhon just let her go...?"
"Because it was my idea to take her in the first place," Maddie snapped. "Okay?!"

"Please," Maddie scowled. "Without Celeste, you're a mess. You would've caught on that I'm not trying to help you guys. Only leading you to your trap." She gestured around herself. "I have succeeded. Now, I am truly sorry for hurting you so badly, but it had to be done. I won't do it again."
"Yes, you will!" Austin shouted. "If you did it before, you'll keep doing bad things!"
"Awfully brave talk for somebody who isn't going to be spared," Maddie murmured. "Typhon, make a force field around me, some of them look murderous."

Maddie yelped in pain, and Charlie suddenly shoved Annabeth off, looking furious. "Stop hitting her!"
Maddie narrowed her eyes at Annabeth. "Thank you, Charlie." She brushed off her clothes, looking upset. "Where was I? Oh, yes. You all have the choice to join me."
Austin glared at Maddie. "Nobody would accept a-"
"Chris and Christiana already said yes," Maddie said. "C'mon, guys. It'd be swag."
"Right," Charlie said. "Because even when the world is ending, Maddie describes something as 'it'd be swag.' I don't know. You were my best friend. You are my best friend. I'm in."
