Celeste nodded, feeling bad for lying, and tried again. After a few minutes, she was drenched in sweat, but three fishhook barrel cacti had grown.
Willow smiled. "Good job."
"Meh," Maddie muttered. "You did okay."

Maddie chopped off the tops of all the cacti. Celeste took pulp out of the water and began drinking it, letting Willow drink from another one. Maddie just watched, not seeming thirsty.

Celeste put one of her arms around Annabeth in a comforting way, and started walking again.
Maddie really wanted to comfort Annabeth, but felt like it'd just make Annabeth angry, so she kept walking, awkwardly sticking her hands in her pockets.
