Maddie paused, and it looked like a memory flashed in her eyes. "If I don't belong here," Maddie said. "Where do I belong? At home, my parents hit me and yell at me no matter what I do. At camp, everyone bullies me."
Jack frowned. "You mean...you remember everything, now?"
"I do," Maddie said. "But I still don't want to leave."

Jack angrily took out his knife, then Moon hit him in the back of the head. "Don't you even think about hitting her, Jerk Face." Moon looked at Maddie, expecting her to be angry.
Maddie looked like she was trying not to smile. "Well done, Moon."
