Maddie had an awful dream that night. She had hard pressure on her chest, and could barely breathe the whole dream. She felt cold, and could barely see, no matter how she tried to switch on the lights on-or more IN-her eyes. She woke up, gasping for breath, only to realize she was underwater. How come she was underwater?! How did she miss that?! She screamed, but it made a barely audible sound. She couldn't find which way was up or which way was down. It was pitch black, so that didn't help either.

Maddie tried gasping for air, but she just found more mouthfuls of water. She dumbly kept gasping for air until her lungs were filled with water, and she passed out, floating to the very bottom of the lake.

Percy ran to the lake and jumped in, not caring that he could possibly drown. He pulled Maddie to the surface, and onto to the ground, feeling like he was sinking. He couldn't breathe. It felt like the water was his enemy, rather than the element he could control.
