"Haven't you seen her burp the alphabet?" Moon grinned.
"That's another one of my awesome talents," Maddie laughed a bit, but still seemed distracted.

Maddie walked into the house, and said, "Hold your breath."
Moon frowned. "Why would I-oh, gods."
The home smelled horribly of blood and vomit.
"Yeah," Maddie said quietly.
Her dad was either dead or passed out on the couch, with a broken TV blaring.

"You should've seen my home in the 1700's," Maddie said. She grabbed an empty bottle and smashed it on the table.
Mr. Hills flinched. "What?!"
"When was the last time you went outside?" Maddie asked, crossing her arms against her chest.
"Uh..." Mr. Hills glanced at the clock, and squinted his eyes. "What day is it?"
Maddie threw her hands up in the air. "New York is a mess!"

"Excuse me?!" Mr. Hills demanded.
Maddie glared at him, and ran up the stairs, trying to block out the sounds of his shouts. Moon followed.

Upstairs, Maddie stopped in front of a door that was engraved with the words 'GO AWAY.' She picked the lock to the door, muttering, "I lost the key..."
After a moment, it finally opened, and Maddie walked inside. Moon took a big gasp, because it smelled kind of like cupcakes and fruit, not like the rancid air downstairs. The walls were black, the carpet was black, the ceiling was black, the bed was black, and the pillows were black. There was even a black puppy sleeping on the bed.

The dog woofed happily at the sound of his name, and licked Maddie's cheek.
Maddie set the puppy down, and opened her closet. There was a snake cage, a bird cage, and a bunny hutch that was filled with bunnies, and hamsters.
"Whoa," Moon muttered.

Maddie nodded. She got the animals out, and said, "The snake's name is Tobias, the white bunny's name is Harry, the brown bunny's name is Tris, the ginger bird is Katniss, the black bird is Cinna, and the hamster is Hermione."

"Yeah," Maddie said quietly. The birds flew onto her shoulders, the snake wrapped around her leg, and the bunnies and hamsters hopped into Maddie's bag. Gale happily began following Maddie out of the house. Maddie walked by her dad without a word.
When Moon looked back at her, Maddie looked like she was about to cry.
