When Maddie and Moon got there, they gasped. What used to be a beautiful town was now wrecked. A lot of people were screaming and groaning. They weren't necessarily dying, but they looked pained.
Maddie's body was frozen with shock as she glanced up at the Empire State. It was torn down.

"Why would they do something like this?" Maddie whispered.
Many policemen were running around, shouting commands to each other. The crowd took notice to Maddie, Moon, and Annabeth.
A young man grabbed Maddie's arm. "Save us!" he cried.
Maddie pulled her arm away. "Look, I-I can't..."

A little girl wrapped her arms around Maddie's legs, and began to shriek.
Moon pried the girl off, but the girl was now also crying along with screaming.

"Does your dad live here? My parents do," Maddie said, and suddenly looked worried. "Oh my gods, do you think they're okay?!"
"I thought they hit you," Moon frowned.
"They're my parents," Maddie said quietly. "I still care about them, even if they yell half of the time."

Maddie sobbed into her knees silently.
"Maddie's family was messed up. Her dad was always drunk," Moon whispered to Annabeth. "Her mom always beat her. Chris was depressed, and Maddie's twin sister wouldn't talk about anything but fashion. Maddie eventually went insane from it all. It's better if she doesn't have a family, okay? It makes her emotionally unstable."

Maddie walked to a door, and frowned. "...They took away my keys."
"To your own house?!" Moon asked.
"It's their house, technically," Maddie said, sounding irritated. "I just have a room in it. Unless it's time to clean or pay the bills, THEN it's my house." She rolled her eyes, and began picking the lock on the door. The door swung open in about twenty seconds. "Like a boss."
