Annabeth stumbled over the grass and dirt ahead of her. She could barely keep up with Maddie, and the ring was getting heavier by the minute. It felt like she was holding the weight of the sky all over again.

After an hour, they were at the base of the volcano. Annabeth could see an entrance in the side of the volcano, and there was fire inside. The entrance would lead her to the fires of the volcano, where the ring could be destroyed. The climb looked impossible, but it had to be done. She had come this way to destroy the ring, and it would happen. She knew the volcano was where the ring would be most powerful, and if she wasn't careful, she might possibly claim the ring instead of destroying it.

Annabeth climbed up the volcano. When she reached the entrance, she climbed inside. Just destroy the ring, she thought. She stood in the entrance, staring at the lava and fire below. She held the ring in front of her.

Annabeth stared at the ring. "I can't destroy it." She said. "The ring is mine."
A telkhine snuck up behind Annabeth, and pushed her over the edge, reaching for the ring. Annabeth hung on the edge with one hand, watching the telkhine fall into the fire along with the ring. If she let go, the same would happen to her.
