A few minutes later, Maddie felt somebody tug on her hair. She looked up to see Celeste. Her eyes widened. "Oh my gods, how did-"
"Shh," Celeste said, trying to sound as falsely gentle as possible. "Just follow me out. I'll tell you the plan if you do."
Maddie nodded, deciding it'd be wisest to trust Celeste. She got up and followed her out of the cage, but got nervous when she locked it so Leo couldn't get out.

Celeste smiled, but it seemed almost cruel. Her eyes flashed golden for less than a moment, and she said, "Oh, it was quite easy, actually." She took out a crude dagger.
Maddie frowned, her heartbeat speeding up. "Why did you-"
Celeste shoved Maddie to the ground, getting on top of her and pressing her feet against Maddie's wrists so she couldn't get up. "It's cute how you're so untrusting, but right then when I wasn't trustworthy you thought I was."

"She's betraying us," Maddie growled.
"And all of a sudden, you grow a brain," Celeste said, digging her feet harder into Maddie's already sensitive veins. She teasingly ran the blade around Maddie's face and throat, like death was a game. "You know, I kind of always wanted to kill you, but I didn't have the courage to do it. Hurting someone who's already so damaged? It's like hurting a puppy. A little, helpless puppy. But then I didn't care."
"I'm not helpless," Maddie said, but it was hard to act so brave when Celeste could kill her at any moment.

Celeste glared at Annabeth, her eyes flashing golden again. "If you knew what was good for you, you wouldn't have done that."
Maddie tried to get up and run, but she ended up stumbling back down. Celeste just laughed. "Trying to escape?" She dug the knife into Maddie's ribs, and there was horrible shrieking.

Celeste's eyes turned back to their normal color finally, and she frowned. "Wha...what's going on? Why's Maddie dying?!"
Maddie looked furious, and she began swearing at Celeste violently, who sheepishly covered her ears.

Annabeth hugged Celeste tightly, completely silent. For a moment, nothing else mattered to her. Her prosthetic leg, her wounds and scars, and all the pain she felt disappeared.
