Charlie raised his gun, and Maddie suddenly jumped out in front of him. Charlie flinched and screamed.
Maddie pointed a knife at Charlie, then at Leo, looking confused. "Wha...why are you with Charlie?!"

"Uh...yeah, I guess," Tara said.

"Thanks," Thyra said. She ran back to the infirmary.

"If you go away now, your death will be slightly less long and painful," Charlie snapped at Maddie. "He's on my side, now, so you can forget about him."

Tara walked into the infirmary, and said, "I can tell why you want that leg to be amputated."

"She's never going to be safe, and you know it," Charlie snapped.
"I'm right here," Maddie said quietly, but she was cowering against a wall.

"What if Tara messes up?" Celeste said nervously. "What if Annabeth can't walk with her prosthetic leg? What if she's mad at me? What if she doesn't wake up?"

Leo sent a huge blast of fire at Charlie, looking furious.

"It's going to be fine," Thyra said. "Annabeth's been hurt before."

Charlie ducked out of the way, his face pale, but he quickly regained his bravery. He shot Leo's shoulder.

"Yeah, but this time it's going to cost her leg," Celeste said.

Charlie glared at Maddie, and she swung at him with her shaking fist. Luckily, there was a dull cracking noise and he fell unconscious.

Maddie gently tugged off Leo's shirt, and wrapped a bandage around his shoulder the best she could.

Tara nodded. Celeste pushed past her quickly to see Annabeth.
