Maddie nodded. She began walking around, and after about an hour, she spotted Charlie and Daniel on a bridge, talking. "I see them. Charlie's holding the cure. I have to talk to him."

"I will," Maddie kissed Leo's cheek. "Stay here unless I'm dying."
She ran over to Charlie and Daniel. They spoke for a few times, until Charlie looked pretty ticked. He took out an injection and pushed it into Maddie's arm, making her flinch and scream.

Leo frowned, and ran over to them. He punched Charlie in the face and grabbed the cure.

Charlie glared at Leo, and pushed Maddie off the bridge. He held onto one of her hands, and angrily said, "Grab the edge." He let go of her hand.
Maddie desperately grasped onto the edge, the disease already spreading across her tiny body. Her hands began shaking, she became extremely cold, and she coughed violently. She tried not to look down, but she already knew how high up they were.
Charlie blocked off Leo from Maddie. "Give me the cure or I'll let her die."

Charlie looked furious. "Don't be cute. Both Annabeth and Maddie are going to die now, and I'm not giving you the cure."
Maddie held onto Leo for balance, silently staring at the ground.

Charlie shrugged. "All of your lives."
Maddie rolled her eyes. "Then there wouldn't be anyone to take the cure back, idiot."
"Then any two of you for Annabeth's life," Charlie said.
Maddie felt like it was a trap, but she didn't say anything. If there was a chance to get Annabeth back, even if it meant two of them dying, she thought it could be worth taking.

"Go already, or the deal's off," Charlie snapped.
Maddie glared at Charlie, and grabbed the cure.
This better be worth it, Maddie thought. It won't be worth it...
She silently walked away after that, not wanting to say goodbye or look at Leo any longer. Even though she knew he was doing her a favor, it felt like it was something unforgivable.

Leo watched Maddie go, completely silent.
Back at camp, Annabeth was only getting worse. She had begun to cough up blood, and she was running a high fever.

"Now," Charlie said, "you both probably think I'm going to give you both the privilege to die peacefully. Well, I'm not. Daniel apparently thinks you two are 'useful', because Valdez can control fire and Jackson can control water. If we can't raise the Earth goddess, we can at least torture camp. This isn't an option. We're forcing you to do this, or we'll make you watch everybody you love die then kill you."

Maddie shadow-traveled back to camp, thinking being quicker was better. She ran into the infirmary, completely dazed and nearly unconscious from the growing sickness and shadow-travel. "Is Annabeth still alive?!"

"Good," Charlie said. "First off, Percy's okay, but you're definitely too weak. Have you even ever lifted a weight?!"

Maddie frowned, and took out an injection. She quickly put it in Annabeth's arm. "You'll start feeling better in a few minutes. Can you put it in my arm, too? Charlie gave it to me."

"Well, you better start, or no one is going to take you seriously," Charlie said. "We're attacking the camp in a week. I doubt that's enough time, but also practice your fire skills. And by the way, if you Iris-message your friends or Valdez's stupid girlfriend, we're killing them along with you."

"That's absolutely fantastic," Maddie muttered.
At least she's going to get better really soon, Maddie thought, and put the injection into her own arm. Everything's going to get better. You'll get Leo back, and even Percy. They're going to be alright. They'll be alright. They have to be alright...

"Where we've been staying," Charlie said. "Maddie's old house. It's just us four, so we each get a room, even though they're pretty damaged. Harry has to deal with many more stupid demigods, so you're lucky."

Maddie nodded. "She will be when she wakes up." She hadn't noticed she was crying until she heard her voice cracking, and she was mortified.

Charlie rolled his eyes. "Follow me." He walked to an old house, and said, "I got Abby's room and Daniel got her parents' rooms. You two can decide who gets Maddie's and Chris's, I don't really care."

"Charlie took Leo and less importantly Percy in exchange for the cure," Maddie said. "And I haven't sensed their deaths, so it must mean he's doing something even worse than death."
