Annabeth ran next to Maddie, and when she saw the empty space, her face paled. She had never thought of Zoe as her daughter, but now she felt like she had lost a child. She staggered back, completely silent.

Percy grabbed Annabeth's hand. He noticed her eye was swollen shut, due to an injury. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Annabeth said, but her expression said she wasn't.

Chris sat down next to Maddie, and patted her arm. Maddie swatted his hand away, looking angry. "I said leave me alone!"
