"It only eats pomegranate seeds," Charlie said. "That's how it survives. It's an underworld cat. Not only is she torturing the cat, she's using it to put your guard down. It's meant to kill you." He suddenly lifted out the cat, holding it in the moonlight, and it didn't even look like itself. It was just the skeletal structure of a kitten.

"There's no more to the story!" Charlie shouted, and stabbed Maddie in the stomach. "You manipulated Annabeth and everyone around you. You never cared about anyone. You deserve all the pain, Maddie. Every last bit of it and more."
Maddie touched the wound on her stomach, looking horribly weak.

Annabeth quickly punched Charlie in the face, kicked him between the legs, and shoved him to the ground. She picked Maddie up and carried her to the infirmary.

Tara frowned, pulling up Maddie's shirt. "The wound looks really deep, Annabeth." She grabbed a white cloth and pushed it against Maddie's stomach. In a few minutes, the cloth was red.
