"...I think it's safe," Charlie muttered.
"Never say that," Maddie said.
The first empousa popped out of nowhere, but she was in her human form. She grinned at Charlie. "Hello!"

The empousa's eyes turned red, and she hissed.
"Now you're even creepier," Charlie said.
She glared at Charlie, and lunged at Annabeth.
Charlie backed away, but Maddie threw herself at the empousa. It clawed at her cheek, and she screamed.

Annabeth quickly stabbed the empousa at the first chance she got. It was hard to tell in the dim light, but she looked older- more like she was before she suddenly got younger.

The empousa hissed angrily in pain, and clawed at Annabeth.
Maddie stabbed it in the back, and it disintegrated, probably going to other place in Tartarus. Blood was trickling down Maddie's forehead and cheek. "Is it as bad as it feels?" she murmured.
"Probably worse," Charlie admitted, touching the deep wound on Maddie's face.

"So," Maddie said, "you just happen to bring along gauze wherever you go?"
