"Charlie," she said in a quiet voice, "can you hear me?"
Nothing happened for a few seconds. Maddie frowned.

Suddenly, a knife flew out of nowhere and landed next to Maddie's ear on a tree. Maddie flinched, blood trickling down her neck. She pulled it out of the tree, and there was a note tied to it. It said, 'Hi old friend'.
Maddie scowled. "Is that all he can say?!"

Maddie wiped away the blood on her ear. It began snowing, and Maddie regretted not bringing a heavier coat.
"At least I know he can hear us," Maddie mumbled. "But a knife that says 'hi friend' isn't exactly the kind of response you want from you're old cru-" Maddie hesitated. "Friend."

Suddenly, everything grew darker. Much, much darker. The flashlight shut off, and it was pitch black.
"Not again..." Maddie mumbled.

Everything grew light again, but they were in a dimly lit room, with people wearing black suits and dresses. Maddie's clothes mysteriously turned into a black dress, and so did Annabeth's. Maddie mumbled a swear.
