"I'm not as strong as I used to be." Annabeth said. "I've been pushed down enough times to lose hope in everything. Nothing has ever worked out for me. I've been attacked by spiders, and I was forced out of my home when I was 7. I lived on the streets for a while, and even after I came here, my life has been horrible. Athena practically disowned me. You don't know what it's like."

"You can never lose hope, Annabeth," Maddie said. "When I was a kid, Moon's grandfather used to tell me a story that there was a little girl who never saw a sunset before. She panicked when she saw the sun setting, and lost all hope that it would ever come back up again. So she died. You can't be like that little girl, Annabeth. The sun will come up again eventually. You just need to wait for the sunrise."

"It always rises, Annabeth. Has there ever been a day where the sun didn't rise? 'Hey, where did the sun go, Bob?' 'I dunno Joe, it just disappeared.' 'Disappeared?' 'That's what I said, Joe. Disappeared.' 'Well why did it disappear?' 'I have no idea. Maybe it fell asleep? Wake up, sun.' 'That won't be any use, you idiot.'" Maddie said, using a western accent for Joe, and a New Jersey accent for Bob. "Have you ever heard that conversation? No, because the sun always comes up."

"Still," Maddie said. "Happiness doesn't just fade away. It's an illusion inside your brain that people feel when something they enjoy happens, but it's replaced with sadness when something you don't like happens. So...maybe it'd help to just not acknowledge the sadness. Don't just say 'I'll never find happiness.' Say happiness is coming soon. Say soon you'll find happiness. If you keep on believing, you'll have enough hope to carry on. And even if you never find happiness, you'll know that you tried. It's better than knowing that you didn't try at all to be happy, and that maybe you could've done something to make it happen."

Maddie came outside and saw a hydra. She sighed, and grabbed her extra knife. It didn't feel as good as her regular knife that she dropped down the sewer, but she had to just deal with it.

The boy grinned, and ran over to his friends. They talked for a while, and Annabeth's name could be heard several times throughout the conversation.
"She's such a downer." One of them laughed.
"Michael, she's always been that way. She's just too caught up on books all the time." Michael said.
"Well, she needs a life." The other boy said.
