Maddie nodded. "Yeah, it does. Just smile like the Cheshire Cat from Alice and Wonderland. See, he was really creepy when he smiled. And I have a creepy smile too, but it's a lot better to have a creepy smile than not smile at all. But you have a nice smile, so you should really smile more."

"You have to find your inner child." Maddie said. "And being a child is fun." Maddie pulled out a chocolate bar. "Remember, when you're sad, it's the dementors fault. So it's perfectly fine to eat loads of chocolate. And chocolate is good. I mean, has anyone ever asked you 'Want some chocolate?' and you're like 'No man, I don't want chocolate.'? No, that's never happened, because everyone likes chocolate."

"That's just because of the dementors. They're messing with your brain." Maddie said. "They're telling you 'Annabeth, don't eat the chocolate. Annabeth, don't be happy. Annabeth, be all sad. Annabeth, listen to us.'" Maddie said, doing a really creepy voice for the dementor impression. "Or maybe it's that little voice in your head that talks you out of doing crazy things? That voice is called common sense. But here's some advice: Don't listen to it. Listen to me, and eat something colorful and delicious. Like...Skittles. Do you like Skittles?"

Maddie frowned. "Dementors. Again. You're listening to them. You love the Skittles. You embrace the Skittles. You...you..." Maddie started drooling a bit, staring at the Skittles. She tore open the pack and ate a few. "See? I'm not listening to the voice inside my head that's saying: 'Stop eating the Skittles, you're a freaky little loser.' I just tell the voice 'PUT A SOCK IN IT BECAUSE I'M NOT LISTENING!!'"
