"How do I know so many people love me?" Annabeth asked, tears streaming down her face. "Only a few people really know who I am. If everyone else found out, how can I be sure they'd still love me for who I am? You don't know what this is like."

"Maddie, you don't understand what being transgender is like," Annabeth said. "It's much harder than you think. It's not just believing you're a different gender. It's being uncomfortable with your own body and hating how other people see you." She sighed. "...I just wish you'd understand what I'm going through. I just want to kill myself."

"I've always been uncomfortable with every part of me, Annabeth," Maddie said, not seeming angry, but just upset. "I need coffee and drugs and alcohol to survive and take any one of those out and in at least an hour somebody dies. I don't like how short I am and how thin I am and how easy it is to take advantage of me because of that. I hate my curly hair, I hate my green eyes, I hate how I always look like I'm ill, and I just pretty much hate every single part of my soul and body."
