Annabeth watched Autumn leave, and she ran off to find the source of the growling. Several moments later, a cry could be heard from far off into the woods that ended abruptly.

Autumn knocked desperately on Maddie's door. "Maddie! Maddie! Maddie!"
Maddie opened the door, frowning. "What happened this time?"
"Annabeth is trying to find some growling sound," Autumn said. "She told me to leave."
Maddie had heard the crying sound, and forced a mutual expression. "Okay," she said softly. "Stay in my cabin, and I'll go get her. Don't leave until I come back."

Maddie covered her mouth, trying not to vomit. She already felt queasy from taking so many pills, drinking, and not eating.
Stupid Annabeth, Maddie thought. Stupid, stupid Annabeth. What was she thinking?! She could've just left the growling alone, but no, she had to go look what it was. And now she's out there getting bloody killed and I can do is find her corpse. Not to mention I have to somehow convince everyone that I wasn't the one who killed her...
Maddie sped up, and soon entered the woods. She wanted to call Annabeth's name, but she figured Annabeth might be unconscious-or dead-and if she wasn't the monster could find her.

After a while, the growling stopped, but soon after, a Nemean Lion could be seen in the distance, dragging Annabeth's limp body behind it. Annabeth had several serious looking wounds, and her spine was bent at a funny angle. He eyes were wide open with terror, but she wasn't moving one bit.

Maddie desperately clamped her hand harder over her mouth, but it was too late. She threw up everywhere, until she felt like she had nothing left in her-not even blood. She didn't remember striking the Nemean Lion, but the next thing she knew her knife was digging hard into the lion's throat.

Maddie tried to puke again, but she just made a horrible choking sound, proving she had nothing left in her body to get rid of. She just curled up on the dirt, wheezing and staring at Annabeth who she was sure was dead.

Maddie picked up her knife, and stared at Annabeth for a moment.
"I do love you, Annabeth," Maddie said softly next to Annabeth's ear so she could hear if she was still conscious. "That's why I'm doing this."
She plunged the knife into Annabeth's heart, hoping it'd finish Annabeth off without any extra pain.

Maddie ran her fingers through Annabeth's dirty hair, and sang a quiet lullaby. She didn't know if it was for her or Annabeth, but it started to get annoying speaking so quietly so she screamed and tore at her own skin.
