Zoe handed Maddie the photo. It had to have been taken shortly before Annabeth had first come to camp, because she looked very young, about seven years old. She ran running with Luke and Thalia by her side, a huge shadow looking over them. They all looked beaten up, but Annabeth looked the worst. It was easy to tell that she hadn't eaten in several days, and she was covered in cuts and bruises. But the most concerning things in the photo were the cuts on her wrist.

"I already know," Zoe said. "But she deserved better. They should've helped her." She picked up another photo of Annabeth, in which she looked about ten. She had more cuts on her wrist.
"They've known for a long time, apparently," Zoe said quietly. "How old is she now?"
