Maddie stayed awake for a few hours, too angry to fall asleep. The pain finally stopped, so she went to bed around ten. She had nightmares that she was back in the revolution, and she woke up, shaking. She walked to Leo's room and knocked on his door.

"While I was telling her about how tall and strong he was, it just reminded me how small I was," Maddie said quietly. "I'm not even human, so I have no chance of ever getting taller or looking stronger. That means I'll have to be weak and short the rest of my life, while even the people that normal people classify as 'short' look tall to me."
