"Well, now you're going to hear it," Maddie said. She cleared her throat. "There was once an Indian princess who was offered a piece of everlasting corn for her village. There were miles and miles of fields of corn, and she could pick any corn she wanted. But, she was not allowed to go back and pick an ear of corn she had already passed. She saw many great pieces of corn as she walked, but she wanted to wait and get the very best piece of corn." She glanced at Annabeth. "Are you seeing where this is going?"

Maddie nodded. "Right. She kept going and going, hoping the corn would get better. It didn't. The corn only got worse. She had to pick a bad piece of corn, that got all of her village sick. The princess disappeared, ashamed of herself. Then everyone died." She smiled. "The end."

Maddie laughed. "When I first heard the story, I said something similar to that, but in a more gory way. No, that's not the lesson. The lesson is that you have to make your decisions quickly and wisely. Don't keep waiting for the 'best part of your life'. Live your life now, do what feels right, not what's perfect."
