Maddie nodded. "Okay, so I was thirteen. My stepdad adopted a girl about eleven from the orphanage. She had a pretty good life, until her family passed away, and she went to the orphanage. For some reason, I was jealous of her. That she had a good childhood, unlike me. She loved me, and she trusted me, even though she rarely talked. But since I was jealous of her, I was never nice to her. Things went downhill from there. My stepdad's new girlfriend died, and he never paid attention to my stepsister or me. He just watched us turn to skin and bones. And then..." Maddie stared at the ground, not wanting to continue.

"A storm hit our house. My stepdad refused to help us. My stepsister starting screaming and running, and I started feeling bad for her. I promised her I'd die before letting something happen to her...but then a tree fell, and killed her. The bad part was that I didn't even try to save her. The worse part was that I didn't even cry when she died. Maybe it was tied to the fact I was jealous of her. And the worst part was that I broke my promise. I told her I'd die for her, but I didn't even try to help her," Maddie said quietly, staring at the ground. "It made me feel like some sort of monster. I didn't even show up to her funeral. I felt so heartless..."
