"Yeah, I know how that feels," Charlie mumbled. "Don't you have friends, though?"

"Better than none," Charlie said. "Drinking alcohol makes suicidal thoughts stronger, too, so you should stop doing that."

"If you want to get better, you know have to try," Charlie said.

"What's the point in even trying to live?" Annabeth asked. "We're all going to die, anyway."

"...What's your favorite thing to do?" Charlie asked. "Something that makes you happy, or at least content."

Annabeth shrugged. "Dunno. I haven't been happy in a long time."

"When you read books, they always end, whether you want them to or not," Charlie said. "Right?"

"Of course," Annabeth said. "But what does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything will eventually have to come to an end," Charlie said. "You would still read a book, even though you know it'll have to end. Luckily, this is the same for good things and bad things. Everything just has to end at one point. That's why even though life ends, and we know we're all going to die, you have to make the most of it. Because wouldn't you rather die knowing you did all you could, rather than die knowing you did nothing?"

"Charlie, there's a reason some people don't finish reading a book," Annabeth said. "The book probably wasn't any good. And it didn't need to be successfully finished. It needed to be over quickly."

"That's because the person who wrote the book didn't put enough effort into making it good," Charlie said.

"I didn't come here to give you candy and tell you the world is a wonderful place, kid," Charlie rolled his eyes. "I just got out of bed and I really want a bagel. I came here to tell you to wake up. Things aren't always sunshine and rainbows. Most of the time, things are pretty cruddy. But this isn't a fairytale. Nobody's going to want to make you feel better if you treat them horribly and you only care about yourself, which is what you're doing right now. You screwed up your life. You can't make anybody take responsibility for how horrible you feel. You can make whoever hit you or lied to you take responsibility for making you hate them, but you can't make them responsible for making you hate your life. They don't care that they hurt your little feelings. And neither should you. You did this to yourself, and if you broke yourself apart, you can put yourself back together."

Annabeth sighed. "Does it look like I care? I'm not feeling so horrible on purpose. I don't know why I feel this way, I just do."

"Well, to start off, how about you stop pushing your friends away?" Charlie said coldly. "Humans aren't dolls. You can't just pick them up and force them to care about you when you want, and then put them back in the box for who knows how long. You've been lucky enough to get people who actually care about how you feel, and you treat them like dirt. And, yes, it really does look like you care about yourself, because you keep expecting everybody to feel sorry for you when you've done nothing for the people around you."

Annabeth narrowed her eyes and looked down. "Do you think I want to feel this way? Does it really look like I care about myself? I don't, okay? I don't care about a single ******* person anymore."
Leo sighed, looking frustrated with Annabeth's attitude.

"Nobody cares about you, either," Charlie said.
Maddie scowled. "Charlie, you're just making things worse."
"I didn't want to talk to her, anyway," Charlie said.

Maddie groaned. "Charlie!"
"I have better things to do!" Charlie yelled.
