"Because that's the way people are," Celeste said. "Everyone picks on the person that's the smallest, the thinnest, and the one that doesn't fit in. Maddie was all of these, but it wasn't really her fault. She was small and thin because Father never fed us, and she was gothic, so everyone made fun of her because of it."

"No, she doesn't," Celeste sighed. "But we live in a world where people are affected by the actions a person makes, not by how good they are at heart. So sometimes it's hard to tell if a person is a good or bad before you actually get to know them, and people refused to get to know Maddie."
